Dr. Mitchell has routinely done volunteer work with the Michigan Commission for the Blind in assessment of low vision patients. He has also volunteered as a team member of the American Optometric Association’s Sports Vision Section with the International Special Olympics World Games. This involved sports vision screenings on athletes from around the globe at the World Games in Minneapolis, Minnesota, New Haven, Connecticut, and also in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Mitchell regards his volunteer work with the Special Olympics as some of the most challenging and most rewarding work of his career.
Dr. Mitchell is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. This distinction is one that comes with plenty of effort. Fellows of the Academy of Optometry must prepare case study works, submit them for review, attend continuing education, and pass an oral examination conducted by the leaders in the field of Optometry.
Dr. Mitchell is also a member of the American Optometric Association, the Michigan Optometric Association the Upper Peninsula Optometric Physicians Society, the Great Lakes Independent Eye Care Network, and the Upper Peninsula Independent Eye Care Network. Locally he is a member of the Keweenaw Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and remains an active member of the Calumet Lions Club, formerly holding the President’s position and an extended commitment as treasurer. He currently remains on the Board of Directors.
After doing undergraduate work at Wayne State University, Dr. Donald Mitchell continued his graduate work at Ferris State University, College of Optometry (currently named the Michigan College of Optometry). Graduating with honors, Dr. Mitchell continued in post-graduate work at The Lighthouse in New York, New York. The Lighthouse is a world-renowned facility which focuses on the visually impaired (low vision patients) and training doctors to address their needs. Fresh out of his post-graduate education, Dr. Mitchell established his solo practice in September 1990 in Laurium, Michigan. He re-established the northern-most optometric practice in the state of Michigan!
In November 1997, the practice was relocated to Calumet, Michigan, in the Station Shops Mini-mall and took on the new name of “InSight EyeCare”. The practice had grown out of its original facility and had to find greater square footage to accommodate the flow of patients and to make room for newer and more advanced ophthalmic equipment. The relocation allowed for an increase in square footage of over 30%. InSight EyeCare made another move in June 2013 to a new office adjoining the Louie’s Fresh Market on Highway 41 in Calumet. With 50% more additional space, the new location allows the doctors and staff at InSight Eyecare to continue providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art eye care. The new location features an expanded dispensary and frame selection, two additional exam rooms, a room for demonstrating and fitting specialty low vision devices, space for sophisticated ophthalmic testing equipment, and an increased capacity reception area with playroom.
Dr. Mitchell has also been active on the national level in the area of independent eye care providers, trying to keep them a viable part of eye care delivery in the marketplace. He is the immediate past President of the National Coalition of Eye Care Independent Professional Associations.
